On page 115 while the wizards are travelling to Lancre Ponder remembers
a logic puzzle about two guards.

A man has to chose between going through two doors. The guard on one
door always told the truth and the guard on the other door always lied.
Behind one door is certain death and behind the other is freedom. He
doesn't know which is which and he can only ask one question.

My question is what would that question be?

At school we did a similar puzzle but the guard that told the truth had
the door to freedom. With this puzzle there is no reference as to who
had which door. If we know which guard has which door it is easy to get
a question because "how many fingers am I holding up" would be enough
to figure it out. But if we don't know which guard lies and what door
they have, what could you ask to reveal the door to freedom?

Wasn't it:
"What would the other guy say if I asked him "will I live when I walk trough
this door?"

"Which door would the other guard say is the door to freedom?"

The guard who tells the truth would know that the other guard
would point out the door to death; the guard who lies would
know that the other guard would point to the door of freedom,
and so will also indicate the door to death.
Therefore, choose the other door.

This is an old one, and I remember the answer rather than being clever
enough to work it out:

"What would the other guard say if I asked him which door led to
freedom?". The answer is always the same, and it's the door that leads
to certain death. So go through the other one.

You are forgetting the context. This is Discworld after all, so of course
the wizards would know that both guards were magically transported into the
room and neither guard has any knowledge of which door is which, regardless
of whether they tell the truth or not!

Of course you forget the Cohen the Barbarian tactic of holding a sword
to the Guard's throat and saying "Oh, by the way, *you're* going to be
walking through the door right in front of me!" :-)

Cheers,
Graham.

Ask what answer you would get if you asked the other guard which door
leads to death, and then take the door you get as an answer.

The truth teller will tell you how the liar will lie, and the liar will tell
you a
lie about the truth teller's truth.

The question is answered in the film "Labyrinth". Sarah has to ask the
guards the same question, with one door leading to the centre of the
Labyrinth and the other to certain death. We know she gets it right because
she doesn't die and eventually reaches the centre.

The question - ask one guard about the other: "would he tell me that this
door is the door to freedom?". Whichever door the question is referring to,
take the other one, because one is lying.

I remember that movie! Scared the hell out of me because i was only
seven or so when i saw it, some idiot teenager recomended it as a good
childrens movie at the video shop.

I can only sort of remember that scene now that you mention it, but I
will never forget the well of hands she falls down or the way that the
bricks she marked turned around making her get more lost. Nearly
twenty years later and I still have nightmares!

Thanks to everyone for the answers

In that case, maybe you should ask the question "what would the other guy
say if I asked him "would I still be able to violently murder David Bowie
and the staff of Jim Henson Company if I walk through this door?""

Damn muppets :-)

I'm sorry, you didn't enjoy it, but I must stand up for the
idiot teenager, because I saw it at about the same age and
thought it was brilliant.

official ones you can buy and bring home?? they are, of course, starting
the line with Kermie.. so we can have a properly scaled muppet/human Kermit
sitting in your living room, or at the dinner table, or any number of other
places.....

you don't need to know which guard is on which door. You just ask 'If I
asked the other guard which door led to freedom, which would it be?' then
you choose the other door (because the lying guard will lie and the truth
telling guard will tell the truth about the other one lying)
