I seem to be first in, though I'm sure there are people here who are Scots
by birth and culture as opposed to Scotch by absorption which is more my
case.

It's as real a word as all the other words in the English/Scots/Merkian et
al language(s) which mean 'Goodness gracious me!' or 'Dang my hide' or
'Crikey'. In fact, I think that 'Crikey' is a pretty good equivalent, since
it has distinct passé overtones (I stand to be corrected by any passing
Scots, or nutted by any passing Pictsies).

ISTR that Billy Connolly many years ago had fun with 'Crivens', using it to
take the p*ss out of the Edinburgh and Kelvinside set.

Yes, I'd say 'Crikey' is a good English equivalent: both are
euphemisms for 'Christ' (used as an expletive).

'Crivens' always reminds me of a childhood favourite of mine, 'Oor Wullie',
('Our William' in English).
A typical saying of his was 'Jings, crivens and help ma' boab!', (pronounced
'bob').
Oor Wullie is a wee Scottish lad who appears in a comic-strip in the
Scottish (?) newspaper The Sunday Post along side 'The Broons'.
